Balthus
It is undoubtedly the most complete book on the work of Balthus. Published for an exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi of Venice in 2001, it reproduce paintings, watercolours and drawings of the Twenties until 2001. The catalogue starts with the drawings that Balthus made for Mitsou to "girl with the mandoline", painting of 2001. All the works are reproduced in colors and are commented. For a better reading and comprehension of work, paintings of others artists are shown compared to those of Balthus, thus "Self-portrait" of 1940 by Balthus neighbor with the self-portrait of Nicolas Poussin painted 3 centuries before. Many preparatory drawings are also reproduced. The book is illustrated with many photographies of the artist, his workshop and its apartments to the Médicis Villa of Rome where Balthus remained, named by Malraux, between 1961 and 1976.
